"World Bank Technical Paper No. 363.
Environmental Assessment (EA) is now a firmly rooted part of the World Bank's normal business activity, effectively reducing the adverse environmental impacts of Bank-financed projects and influencing their design and implementation. This paper, the second review of the Bank's experience with EA, covers the period from July 1992 to the present and expands upon the First Environmental Assessment Review, which covered 1989-92. The objectives of this review are to provide an overview of the Bank?s response to the evolving challenges of implementing its EA policy; evaluate the quality of EA work; assess the effectiveness of the current pre-approval EA process; examine the implementation experience to date of projects subject to full EA; explore areas of work that present particular challenges; and identify areas requiring further action in EA work."
