The World Bank Atlas has always provided easy-to-read world
maps, tables, and graphs highlighting key social, economic, and
environmental data for 210 economies. This year's Atlas has
been updated and improved with new material taken from the World
Development Indicators 1998. Development themes featured in
previous editions—The People, The Economy, The Environment, and
States and Markets—can still be found in this year's
Atlas. The 30th edition adds two new sections, Global Links and
World View. The Atlas' Global Links, complete with a table,
maps, and charts, is drawn from World Development Indicators 1998
's counterpart section. World View's cartograms and charts
graphically present the developing goals of the 21st century.
Available for the first time anywhere are new estimates of
purchasing power parities (PPP) for countries and data on relative
prices for 79 countries that participated in the most recent round of
the International Comparison Program. Per capita GNP figures are
converted at PPP for better international comparability and are
available for almost all countries. Economic data also include gross
national product (GNP) and the shares of exports, agriculture, and
investment in gross domestic product (GDP). Social data are provided on
life expectancy, population growth, infant mortality, female labor, and
child malnutrition. Population statistics are provided in absolute
terms and as growth rates for 1985-96. Environment data are presented
on deforestation, water use, energy consumption, and air pollution.
States and Markets includes data for private investment, stock market
capitalization, government deficit, and telecommunications
infrastructure.
The World Bank Atlas has become an international standard in
statistical compilations. This edition makes an ideal reference for
office or classroom. The text appears in English, French, and
Spanish.
